A map for the journey

The Process Model of Eco-anxiety and Ecological Grief by Dr. Panu Pihkla 2022

Don’t worry if it seems overwhelming the first time you look at it! It took us a little time to get our heads around it too! However, it’s been really helpful for us. We use it as a kind of map. Just like an Ordinance Survey map, it doesn’t set out a specific path for you to follow, but it shows you the terrain ahead.

From left to right there are three phases.

  1. Learning about the crisis. The first four circles show the steps from genuinely knowing nothing about the climate crisis to realising the extent of the trouble we’re in and the resulting shock.
  2. Coping and changing. Following the shock of realisation, we need to find a way to cope. Action, emotional engagement (mostly grieving), and distancing are the three dimensions of coping that we need to engage with. What this looks like will be different for different people.
  3. Living with the ecological crisis. By working through the tasks of coping and changing we adjust to the crisis. The stage of living with the ecological crisis still requires us to do work in the areas of action, emotional engagement and distancing, but now there is more balance, more awareness and more skill.

You can read more about how we use this map as a guide in our peer support group.

Resource Collections

This toolkit contains collections of ideas and resources organised by topic. Each list is only a selection of what is available to help us process what’s happening, take action, or look after ourselves and each other. It’s a constant work in process.

The tools will be added to and updated as we explore different topics in our peer support group.
